What is motor oil used for?

1. Motor oil provides lubrication to the engine and reduces friction between pistons, valves, and other moving parts.

When should I change the motor oil?

You should have your motor oil changed in intervals of every 5,000-10,000 kilometres of distance travelled. If you do not drive very often, it is recommended to get your oil changed at least once a year.

How to check the oil level?

1. Park your vehicle on level ground.

2. Turn off the engine and wait until it is cool, and the oil has settled.

3.  Pull out the dipstick and wipe off all the oil with a cloth.

4. Put the dipstick back into its tube and carefully remove it again.

5. Check the oil level on the dipstick. It should be between the upper and lower lines of the dipstick.

Motor oil. How to choose?

Before buying motor oil, refer to the car service manual book, where you will find the recommended type and performance specifications of motor oil.

How much oil should I add?

The oil tank capacity ranges from 4 to 8 litres, depending on the engine size. However, typically 1 litre of oil is required for the engine. Meaning that there is no universal rule concerning the amount of oil to be poured.

If you wish to add oil to the tank, check the capacity of the tank in your car and the remaining oil amount in the engine before proceeding.

If now is the time to change the oil, empty the tank and refer to the car service manual or the internet for technical information regarding the oil before adding it.

Should I have the motor oil changed?

Yes. You need not only to add oil, but to replace it on a regular basis.

Where should I put used oil?

Oil is poisonous and toxic to the environment; therefore, it must be properly disposed of. Do not pour the oil into the sewer, on the ground, or throw it away with domestic waste. 

Summer and winter. Should the oil level differ during seasons?

Most experts recommend that the oil level during winter should be lower than during summer. In winter, the oil level should be about one-third above the lower line. While the recommended oil level in the summer is about two-thirds above the lower line.

Why is that? A lower oil level in winter allows the engine to reach its working temperature faster, while in summer the higher oil level allows more effective cooling. 

How should I fill the oil?

Add oil slowly in small increments before you reach the required level. Adding oil is much easier than removing it, so do not overdo it and add oil in several increments while checking the level. 

What would happen if I overfill or underfill the motor oil?

It is important to know that both overfill and underfill of oil damage the engine.
